Within this section are top tips relevant to
various aspects of Internet, web and ICT related technologies.
>> PC Security
Back Up
PC backup is imperative to safeguard
the integrity of your PC data. In the catastrophic event of robbery,
fire or historical data corruption, if you have no backup then all
data will be LOST.
There is a free Backup programme
that comes with every Windows package (see under Accessories/System
Tools).
Always backup to a removable media
(disc, pen drive, ZIP and make sure this is stored OFF premises (the
thief will not remove it from the disc drive before making off with
your computer).
Aim to backup files at least weekly.
Anti-Virus and Firewall
Online connections potentially
expose you to more than 80,000 current viruses.
Install a reputable anti-virus and
firewall software package to protect yourself.
Protection is imperative for
broadband connections (always on).
Ensure the software virus scanning
and firewall settings are fully enabled (i.e. switched on).
Ensure auto-update is switched on to
ensure any new viruses or hacker plots that emerge are automatically
added to your definitions via the internet, and that your PC is now
protected from them.
Similarly renew your anti-virus and
firewall software subscription EVERY year.
General Security
